FUL-ON TRI CLUB AWARDS (based on results)
Each year Ful-On Tri awards trophies to the best male and best female in the each of the following categories: Standard Distance, Middle Distance, Long Distance, Most Improved and Best Newcomer to the Sport. In order to qualify for each of these awards you must enter all qualifying races with Ful-On Tri Club as your club name. All winners must be current Club members. Details of how to qualify for each of these awards are set out below, with the scoring methodology listed at the bottom of this page:
Standard Distance Triathlete of the Year
This award is for all members racing standard distance races (commonly called Olympic distance). You must race a minimum of 2 standard distance events and the average of your best 2 scores is counted. Standard distance races are typically 1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run.
Middle Distance Triathlete of the Year
This award is for all members racing half ironman/middle distance races. You must race a minimum of 2 middle distance events and the average of your best 2 scores is counted. Middle distance races are typically 1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21km run.
Long Distance Triathlete of the Year
This award is for all our long distance athletes. For athletes who have raced more than 1 long course event, your best score is counted. Long distance races are typically 3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42km run, but we also include the ITU long distance races at 4km bike, 120km bike, 30km run in this category.
Most Improved Triathlete of the Year
This award takes a member's previous year's score for any given distance (which must be recorded in the club's results sheet for that year) and compares it with their current year's score over the same distance to see their percentage improvement. Naturally this award goes to members who have been competing for the Club for over one year. Club members need to notify the fixtures secretary at the end of the race season if they would like to be considered for this award.
Best Newcomer to the Sport
This award is only open to members who are in their first year of triathlon racing, and each athlete must race a minimum of 2 triathlon races. The average of your best 2 scores is counted. Club members need to notify the fixtures secretary at the end of the race season if they would like to be considered for this award.
OTHER FUL-ON TRI CLUB AWARDS (voted by members)
Zurich Club Member of the Year Award
This trophy marks the generous £2,000 donation the Club received from Zurich in 2004, and what’s more, you don’t have to be fast to win it! The Zurich Club Member of the Year award is a way for Ful-On Tri to thank our top volunteers who generously give their time, energy and skills to the workings of the Club. This could be on committee, coaching, organising training camps, or volunteering at any number of the various events the Club is involved with throughout the year. Award winners are nominated and voted for by Club members and cannot hold the award for two years running. All nominees must be current Club members.
Dave Aitchison Sportsmanship Award
This trophy has been kindly donated by Dave’s family to honour the spirit of good sportsmanship which Dave so clearly stood for. The Dave Aitchison Sportsmanship award is a way for Ful-On Tri to recognise those whose acts or attitude demonstrate consideration for others in race situations where many would concentrate exclusively on their own endeavours. This could be through helping out with equipment failure on race day, providing pre-race assistance to novices at their first race, or sacrificing their own goals in order to aid a fellow competitor who has come into difficulty. Award winners are nominated and voted for by Club members and cannot hold the award for two years running. All nominees must be current Club members.
SCORING FOR RESULTS-BASED AWARDS
The point scoring is based on your age-adjusted time relative to a benchmark time for each race. The benchmark time is generally the 10th percentile1 of all the race finishing times (across all age groups and both male and female). However, additional adjustments factors are used to compensate for the strength of the competition for national championship races (4%), world championship qualification races (4%), Ironman branded races (5%), Kona Ironman world champs (15%), European qualifiers (2%), European championship races (4%) and other world championship races (10%)
The age adjustment factors are closely aligned to internationally accepted grading systems for masters and age group endurance events. A formula is used to calculate them whereby 27 and 28 years old is assumed to be the fastest age. The adjustments are generally quite small. Some examples are 0.1% for 25 year olds to 2.6% for 40 year olds2.
The results spreadsheet will be updated throughout the race season so you will be able to track your progress. For a bit of fun and to provide some comparison across genders an additional 10% adjustment factor is made for female club member scores.
Footnotes
- In fact an approximation to the 10th percentile is used to simplify the calculation. If there are 100 finishing times then the 10th fastest time is taken as the benchmark. If there are 2789 finishing times then the 278th fastest time is used. i.e. divide the total number of finishers by 10 and round down to the nearest integer.
- A simple quadratic formula is used with the age of the club member in years on the 31st December as an input.
Factor = 0.026042 + ( Age - 15 ) * ( Age - 40 ) / 6000
